AGU Fall Conference

January 22-25, 2024

AGU introduces a new online program featuring poster sessions and invited panels. This virtual event took place from January 22-25, 2024. Center Ph.D. student, Seren Smith, shared insights into the project, “ Empowering Citizen Scientist: Calibration of Purple Air Data to EPA Standards using Open-Source Methodology.” This project, centered on Citizen Science & Environmental Monitoring, addressing challenges in Air Quality Monitoring.

Seren Smith’s research involves a comparative evaluation of machine learning algorithms (RStudio, XGBoost, Sci-kit, Pytorch, TensorFlow) for calibrating Purple Air data to EPA standards. Models are rigorously tested against official EPA air quality data to ensure accuracy and reliability, and the study is currently being developed for publication.

Jacob Cain, Center START intern, also presented in the Virtual Poster session, “Computing Infrastructure for Geophysical Studies.” Jacob Cain’s research highlights the growing role of Deep Learning (DL) in Earth science, acknowledging computational challenges. It addresses these challenges by adapting DL models, testing performance on GPU platforms, and aims to guide Earth science researchers in effectively utilizing GPU computing for optimized AI/ML applications.
