About the Spatiotemporal Innovation Center
Many 21st century challenges to contemporary society, such as natural disasters, happen in both space and time, requiring that spatiotemporal principles and thinking be incorporated into computing process. A systematic investigation of the principles would advance human knowledge by providing trailblazing methodologies to explore the next generation computing for addressing the challenges. This NSF University, Industry and Government collaborative research center for spatiotemporal thinking, computing, and applications is to conduct deliverable-oriented shared research to address the 21st century challenges based on computing by GMU center for intelligent spatial computing (CISC) , thinking by UCSB Center for Spatial Studies (CSS), and applications by Harvard Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA). Companies and non-NSF agencies participate as members by investing limited amount of funding to projects of their direct interests but sharing all projects’ results.
- Improve the spatiotemporal research infrastructure base
- Advance the intellectual capacity of the future scientists, engineers and people
- Establish the national and international leadership in spatiotemporal thinking, computing, and applications
- Collaborate with industry and agencies (members) to identify projects that are of research and development significance for solving 21st century challenges, such as natural disasters, by investigating the spatiotemporal principles within the challenges
- Improve scientific and engineering infrastructure building by collaborating closely on the project through monthly or weekly communications to enable science discovery and application building
- Produce new spatiotemporal products in collaboration amongst the center’s members to establish leadership in the field, and transfer the new technologies to members to improve industry efficiency and competitiveness
- Advance human knowledge and intelligence in collaboration with our members by combining spatiotemporal principles and computing thinking to form spatiotemporal thinking as a new methodology and innovative thinking process to enable physical and social science discoveries, and to conduct the next generation computing

To be a Member of the Center
STC operates under the auspices, rules and standard operating procedures of the NSF I/UCRC program. The operations are managed by universities under the guidance of an Industry Advisory Board (IAB), which is comprised of representatives from every member organization. Each year research scientists propose projects to meet the needs outlined by IAB. The IAB then vote to fund projects. The academia research scientists work closely with and report regularly to industrial members to ensure the project deliverables.
