Job Title: NSF I/UCRC START Internships

Open to Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) and Valdosta State University (VSU) students.

Job description: The NSF I/UCRC for Spatiotemporal Thinking, Computing, and Applications (www.stcenter.net) is looking for several community college students to serve as NSF I/UCRC research interns starting from June 2022 or later. They will potentially work at the George Mason University (GMU) site (Fairfax, VA), depending on funding availability from NSF. In compliance with social distancing guidelines of GMU during the COVID-19 pandemic, the selected interns may work remotely from other locations within the USA.

This opportunity is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) I/UCRC Program and Education and Human Resource training for Skills Training in Advanced Research & Technology (START), which enable students from two-year Institutions of Higher Education (2-yr IHEs) to obtain research experience and consider a further education in spatiotemporal domains (e.g., CS, GIS, Geosciences, etc.). NSF I/UCRC interns will work in a team with graduate students, postdocs, research staff, and faculty at the GMU site and will conduct research related to spatiotemporal issues. NSF I/UCRC interns also have the opportunity to attend a professional conference to present their research results. Interns may participate in a variety of research projects.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled 2-yr IHE students when they start.
  • Applicants should have backgrounds related to computer science, geospatial informatics, information technology, mathematics, statistics, or data science.
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident status is required.
  • Applicants should be able to work as NSF I/UCRC research interns for at least 8 consecutive weeks (Starting date is flexible) and has the potential to work through the school year.
  • NSF I/UCRC research interns will receive stipend and reimbursement for attending one conference related to the research project.

Selection process:

There will be three steps for selecting the students:

  • IUCRC faculties will collaboratively select a pool of promising applicants.
  • Faculty members will select the relevant applicants who match their interest from the pool.
  • A videoconference interview will be arranged with the selected candidates to evaluate the applicant’s background and skills in communication, teamwork, and research interest.
